Urinary Tract Infection
It happens when bacteria gets into your urine and travels to any part of your urinary system, mainly the bladder.
How common are IVUs?
- Anyone can get a urinary tract infection, but they are more common in women.
- 60% of all women will have a UTI in their lifetime.
- Between 20-40% of all women will have repeated urinary tract infections.
- 12% of men will experience a UTI in their lifetime.
Symptoms
When you have a UTI, your bladder and urethra become red and irritated, just like when your throat gets a cold.
- Irritation can cause pain in the pelvis, or lower back, and will cause you to urinate more frequently.
- Burning and/or painful urination is a common symptom.
- Strong and unpleasant odour of urine
- You may have a strong sensation of urinating but only urinate a couple of drops.
Kidney infections can cause fever and upper back pain (usually on one side).
- It is very important to treat these infections because they can easily become complicated.
- The kidney infection can pass into the bloodstream and put your life at risk.
