Circumcision

Surgical procedure that involves the surgical removal of the skin covering the tip of the penis (foreskin).

When is it done?

Family tradition, religious tradition, personal hygiene, preventive health care or when there are diseases of the penis and the skin overlying the penis (foreskin).

Phimosis

When the skin covering the penis (foreskin) is too tight and cannot be fully retracted over the glans penis (the tip of the penis is not exposed).

  • Increased risk of accumulation of a whitish sebaceous secretion (smegma) which increases the risk of infections of the tip of the penis (balanitis).

Paraphimosis

It occurs when the skin covering the penis (foreskin) can no longer be pulled forward over the tip of the penis (normal position).

  • It causes pain and inflammation of the foreskin, and in some cases it can be considered a medical emergency.

Short frenulum

The frenulum is a small fold of skin that joins the glans (head of the penis) to the foreskin at the ventral (underside of the penis).

  • When it is too short, it causes pain and burning at the tip of the penis (glans) from injuries that occur during sexual intercourse.
  • Poor hygiene leads to repeated irritation and infections of the head of the penis (balanitis) and may increase the risk of developing penile cancer.
  • It reduces the risk of contracting STDs (sexually transmitted diseases), such as HPV (Human Papilloma Virus), Herpes, Syphilis, HIV, among others.
  • Patient's desire for aesthetics and hygiene.
