Erectile Dysfunction

The inability to achieve and maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse.

Symptoms:

  • Persistent problems getting an erection
  • Persistent problems maintaining an erection
  • Persistent decrease in sexual desire

Causes:

  • Male erection is a complex process involving the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves), blood vessels, muscles, hormones and the psychological aspect.
  • Sometimes it can be a combination of physical and psychological issues.

Risk factors:

  • Comorbidities, particularly high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus.
  • Smoking (tobacco)
  • Overweight and Obesity
  • Some medical treatments, such as prostate surgery
  • Injuries or trauma damaging nerves and blood vessels
  • Certain medicines
  • Psychological disorders
  • Alcohol and drug use
