Erectile Dysfunction
The inability to achieve and maintain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse.
Symptoms:
- Persistent problems getting an erection
- Persistent problems maintaining an erection
- Persistent decrease in sexual desire
Causes:
- Male erection is a complex process involving the nervous system (brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves), blood vessels, muscles, hormones and the psychological aspect.
- Sometimes it can be a combination of physical and psychological issues.
Risk factors:
- Comorbidities, particularly high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus.
- Smoking (tobacco)
- Overweight and Obesity
- Some medical treatments, such as prostate surgery
- Injuries or trauma damaging nerves and blood vessels
- Certain medicines
- Psychological disorders
- Alcohol and drug use
